Verso: Different hand: "View of the Appomattox Canal - Looking up the River." JB: "Showing the Petersburg Wood Batteaux." Different hand: "Used for batteaux to bring down tobacco from Farmville. Sketch shows batteaux owned by city authorities to furnish fuel to the destitute of the city - 100 per cord. Propelling power performed by men with poles." JB: "Fuel was distributed to the suffering and poor at this point (in the foreground) by the city authorities at Petersburg // Halftone 4 wide."
