Regiment having been ordered by the Col. to cross the river & ascertain the location of a rebel camp proceeded with nine men to a point about 3/4 of a mile from the banks of the the Potomac, when, having just crossed a run, he was startled by the hoarse shout of the word of command 'fire!' followed by a volley from about 40 muskets at but a few feet distance.
