Verso: Fort (or Battery[)] Beauregard St. Phillips Island S.C. // The boats in the foreground (especially at low water) find it impossible to get very near the beach consequently Officers and Gentlemen make it customary to get a sailor to carry them on their backs from the boat of return- I have represented a large boat from a man of war landing provision for the Marine Corp. (who were in the Govenor [sic]) which fell under my notice - the figures on the beach at the right are soldiers- picking up empty shell boxes which completely line the beach they are made thus [drawing of box] - said boxes were thrown from the vessells [sic] after the shell were removed during the bombardment - and they end being used by the soldiers & marines to build fires with - I think I have placed the three gun battery at the left - a little too low down - it should be more on a line with the main fortification -."
