Recto: "Charlestown -- Va. from the tower of the Episcopal Church, used as a temporary signal station. I sketched this in anticipation of an attack on our reconnoitering forces which the rebel citizens were confident would be made. My position commanded a fine view of the approaches to the town, but our troops departed unmolested, there having been no action but an artillery duel about four miles out from Bolivar heights, which furnished no novel points. // [signed] F.H.S."
Verso: No text. Several sketches, two of boats against a large setting sun, one more sketchy, perhaps of a wagon cart.
