Recto: "Cincinnati Sept. 6, 1862. Feeding the Squirrel Rifles at the Fifth St. Market House. // The men who have deposited their firearms (foreground) are mostly in shirt sleeves, each has a tin cup hanging in their breast buttonholes. // Drop this market house and scene belonging down a little, the other corner is a little too near as you will see by the size of the figures."
Verso: "The ladies and the citizens provided amply for the immense number of farmers who rushed to the city at the first alarm. The fifth street market house was turned in to an immense dining saloon, along its whole length a double line of tables were covered with all kinds of eatables and the Squirrel Rifles were marched in and out [inserted: after] partaking a plentiful meal in perfect order. It is indeed remarkable [cancelled: with what good] that the citizens and authorities have managed to sustain such excellent regularity in all departments. There seem [sic] to be no hurry and no alarm and no want anywhere. The citizens and all forces who have arrived have now...[o]rganized....The contrast between...Gen. Lew. Wallace certainly understands the handling of affairs...the present and will no doubt be superseded in a very short time. [signed] HL. // I go to the other side of the river tomorrow, sketches will arrive rapidly."
