Verso: "This represents the Crossing of the enemy at Williamsport Md. Their boat was a scow. The wire extending across the river was fastened, on the Virginia side, to upright posts thus [sketch]. The little round objects on the wire, are wheels, which connect with the ends of the boat, one end of which is swung, slightly , down stream - the current carrying the boat along // make men wading up to the arm pits, horses swimming, and all the wagons the space will contain. Artillery on the opposite bank (Virginia) protected the ferry // Wmsport July 15th'63 // [signed] C.E.H. Bonwill."
