Verso: "General McGowan addressing the Abbeville Volunteers (in front of the [Charleston] Hotel on their way through Charleston to the Forts.) The Abbeville over one hundred of the wealthiest citizens of their district - and a number of [them] bring their armed Negro servants with them. Their costume is the Garibaldi Red flannel tunic with cross belts & black pants. The General made a very stirring speech and referred to the time when he stood in the same spot as a volunteer in the Palmetto Regiment then on his way to Mexico. The flagstaff on the right is the first one erected in Charleston and was erected by subscription of the merchants of Hayne & adjacent streets. The Charleston Hotel is occupied by the Governor and staff & by nearly all the members of the Legislature & is the busiest place in Charleston. It has been kept by D. Mixer for a number of years and for comfort and a well provided table is the best in the state."
